The High Holidays provide us, both as individuals and as a community, with the opportunity to reflect on the past year and embark on new beginnings. At this time, it is most fitting to share special news about Camp Poyntelle, operated by the Samuel Field Y of Queens. As part of the Poyntelle family, you understand firsthand the transformative power of Jewish summer camp in forging lifelong friendships, mastering new skills and bolstering ties to Judaism. Now, even more families from our community will be able to have similar sleepaway camp experiences.
Starting in summer 2019, campers ages 6 to 16 will enjoy summers together on one side of camp. Keeping with tradition, our 11th graders (LITs) will live in the “new” Lewis Village campus being constructed this fall and winter. We plan to add more teen bunks to the new Lewis Village campus each year as our camp community continues to grow. When complete, all teens (8th-11th graders) will reside in the new Lewis Village, complete with intimate, purpose-built bunks, within the trees, next to our gorgeous lake. Having all our campers together at Poyntelle will provide a higher quality experience for everyone, as investments in program and infrastructure will now be focused to one side of camp, to the benefit of all. Additionally, our older campers will be able to role model the rich camp traditions that Poyntelle was built on all these years. The traditional Lewis Village side of camp will be utilized as a rental facility which will allow us to provide a tuition “rollback,” (see attached for 2019 rates) and therefore increase affordability for existing and future campers, a core SFY value. Poyntelle will continue to take part in the Foundation for Jewish Camp’s funded One Happy Camper program, which makes up to a $1,000 gift to eligible first time sleepaway campers, regardless of need.
Significant capital upgrades are underway, including athletic field expansions for all sport activities, a state-of-the-art waterfront upgrade complete with a new aqua playground park and innovative high ropes challenge course elements. Also, we are thrilled to announce that we will be launching a new website this fall season, along with fantastic new promotional films and media pieces to reflect the exciting additions to Camp Poyntelle! The camp will continue to provide top notch specialty programming in athletics, waterfront activities, theater and the visual arts, and science and technology (“imagineering”). As a result of these changes we expect a progressive growth in enrollment next summer, with an eventual goal of 500 campers in future seasons.
Lastly, Camp Poyntelle Lewis Village will now officially be known as Camp Poyntelle, to reflect the consolidation of the “two-sided” 71-acre lakefront summer camp.
These changes represent an exciting year-long consultation process, in conjunction with UJA-Federation of New York and the Foundation for Jewish Camp. While reimagining certain aspects of camp, traditions were preserved, every step of the way. Camp Poyntelle continues to pride itself on its sense of community, as well as the Jewish concepts of loving kindness, joy and leadership.
